Ruling party People's National Congress (PNC) Chairperson Abdul Raheem Abdulla has stated that the reason behind the party's defeat in today's mayoral election is that they were unable to put in sufficient effort during the campaigns.
Today's Male' City Mayoral election was won by opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s candidate, Adam Azim.
The closest contending candidate was Azima Shakoor, coming second with 2002 votes less than that gained by Azim.
Abdul Raheem said in a press conference tonight that they had received these results as they had been occupied with assuming responsibilities of the Executive branch of the State, and compiling the members of said government.
"I assure our members that we will learn from the results we have achieved in this election, and put in more effort to ensure we win future elections," he said.
Abdul Raheem said tonight that due to being busy this recent past, he had been unable to conduct work as should be even with the general members of the party. He apologized to the members for this, adding that the lack of connection they had kept with general members had also contributed towards the loss faced today.
He rejected claims that the loss was caused because of the public's dissatisfaction with the government's policies or the President himself.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has also called Adam Azim and congratulated him on the win. He further stated that the government would extend cooperation to the Male' City Council and the Mayor.
