Auditor General's 2018 report on the operations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that an opposition leader's son, Faisal Ibrahim, used MVR 72,438 from the budget of the Maldivian Embassy in Malaysia to acquire spectacles.

Although the report, published on Sunday, does not mention him by name, the minister-counselor during the stated time frame was Faisal, the son of People’s National Congress (PNC) President and Fonadhoo MP Abdul Raheem Abdulla.

As per the report, the embassy's minister-counselor used the sum to purchase Prada glasses for himself and his wife.

Additionally, the Maldivian Ambassador to Malaysia also utilized MVR 26,360 from embassy funds to cover medical check-ups for him and his wife as well. The former Civil Service Commission president, Mohamed Fahumy Hassan, held the position at the time.

As per the report, certain employees withdrew funds from the embassy budget to cover services despite being enrolled in Malaysia's health insurance scheme.

The report asserted that the aforementioned spending could not be permitted considering regulations under which salaries and allowances are given to employees of diplomatic missions, particularly stressing that the state provided health insurance for the workers.

Therefore, the Auditor General advised the state to initiate efforts to recover the money.

A case concerning Faisal's failure to pay for tickets worth MVR 157,290.12 booked through Island Aviation Services (IAS) previously surfaced as well. He has since settled the sum.
