The newly formed Maldives Third Way Democrats (MTD) political party hosted their formative ceremony, on Monday, dedicated to former Vice-President Ahmed Adeeb.
Adeeb was the first signatory to the party fronted by Vice President of Maldives National Chamber of Commerce and Industry Ismail (MNCCI) Ismail Asif.
During the Congress, party founder Asif stated that MTD would not exist without Adeeb.
The recently reinstated Dhidhdhoo MP Abdul Latheef Mohamed and Velidhoo MP Abdulla Yamin Rasheed, had both praised Adeeb during the ceremony, adding that the former Vice-President should be given the opportunity to take part in political activities.
Adeeb is sentenced to 33 years in jail over his involvement in the largest corruption scandal in Maldives, and for orchestrating an assassination attempt on former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
Maldivian Correctional Service (MCS) had transferred Adeeb to house arrest over his poor health, following a kidney surgery that was performed to remove kidney stones.
Despite having shifted his political allegiance to PPM in 2015, MP Yamin was initially elected to the parliament in 2014 as a representative of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). Following his floor crossing, the MP has since resigned from PPM and is now a member of MTD.
