The Maldives government has awarded the project to establish a drainage system in Addu Atoll's Feydhoo. to a Sri Lankan private firm for MVR 18 million.

The state-funded, one-year project was handed over to Senok Trade Combine Ltd in a ceremony held Wednesday. The agreement was signed by Minister of Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim, while Senok Trade Combine was represented by Accountant Prabhat Ruwanpura.

"The people of Feydhoo have long awaited a solution to this problem [of flooding after heavy rains]. We hope that Feydhoo's residents will fully support and cooperate with this project," said the minister.

Thoriq went on to note that flooding in Feydhoo, along with other wards of Addu City, has recently exacerbated due to weather patterns, such as sudden rainstorms. However he assured that the new drainage system would solve the issue, adding that a "storm water management network" will also be established.

The minister further highlighted that such development projects were a great priority under President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's administration.
