The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology has revealed that 95 percent of the waste-to-energy facility being developed in Addu City is now complete.
The ministry said the installation of the waste-to-energy system is almost complete and that the only ongoing work in the project is developing the control building for the plant.
The renewable energy facility has the capacity to generate 1.5 megawatts of power by burning 50 tons of waste every day. The ministry claims one megawatt of power generated from the facility will be used to power the main electricity grid in Addu City.
The ministry expects the project to be fully complete by July 2023.
The waste-to-energy project in Addu City is funded by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) for a total project value of AED 22 million. The project was funded in 2015 to develop an eco-friendly power facility.
According to ADFD, the project will save about 1.9 million litres of diesel and reduce the city’s total waste by 10 percent.
