Maldives Police Service on Monday morning seized over 100kg of drugs from a boat near reclaimed suburb Hulhumale’.
Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed revealed that the operation by the Drug Enforcement Department, supported by Drug Intelligence and Marine Police, confiscated heroin and methamphetamine from the major bust.
“The social and economic impact from narcotic drug trafficking is high”, said CP Hameed in a tweet, assuring that the police will “continue efforts to disrupt the drug trade”.
The latest seizure of illegal narcotics comes on the heels of another major operation conducted in the southernmost atoll of Addu earlier this month.
The police seized approximately 100kg of drugs in the Addu bust as well, and arrested 16 people.
Five suspects, including Ibrahim Rasheed accused of masterminding the smuggling, are currently remanded until the end of their trials.
