President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on Monday, assigned Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail with temporarily leading the Ministry of Communications, Science and Technology.
The decision was finalised after the parliament approved a motion of no confidence against Communications Minister Mohamed Maleeh Jamal on Monday.
Out of 70 parliamentarians that attended the session, 59 voted in favour of the motion, while only one member voted against and four abstained.
This marks the first instance of a no-confidence motion against a cabinet minister since the election of the incumbent administration.
The motion was initially proposed by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to the party’s parliamentary group in November 2020.
Following its approval, MDP parliamentary group leader and Henveiru Central MP Ali Azim submitted the no-confidence motion to the parliament.
