Former Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Dr Mohamed Muizzu on Tuesday, expressed concerns over the reversal of 'Rasrani Bageecha' to 'Sultan Park' on Monday.
Male' City Council has since replaced the signboard at the park.
Dr Muizzu took to twitter claiming that while former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's administration had utilized historical and Maldivian names such as 'Muiveydhoshu Maizan' and 'Rasfannu' (used to name a public park and an artificial beach respectively) - the current administration was attempting to distort history.
Despite these accusations, the long-standing park located in capital Male was built on the demolished grounds of a 16th century Royal Palace hence its original name 'Sultan Park'.
The moniker was rebranded and reopened as 'Rasrani Bageecha' in 2017, amidst vast disapproval from the public.
New developments in the park include a tree-house dubbed ‘Rasrani View’ which includes classrooms, an art-deck offering views across the entire park as well as conference rooms.
The historic ground was transformed into a park in 1968 when the Maldives ended sultanate rule and became a republic nation.
'Rasrani' is a colloquial term for 'kings and queens' in 'Dhivehi' the local language.
