Thulhaadhoo MP Hisaan Hussain who is appointed for Judicial Service Commission (JSC) from the parliament, on Wednesday stated that she will not partake in any issues relating to JSC presented in the parliament's Judiciary Committee.

The MP who was recently appointed for the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) from the parliament made this statement following concerns voiced by some MP's. According to them, there is a chance for a conflict of interest for Hisaan to sit in the judiciary committee while being a member of JSC.

Noting that Judiciary Committee's mandate covers more than holding only JSC accountable, Hisaan affirmed that she would abstain from participating in any discussions carried out by the committee on Judicial Service Commission.

Moreover, Hisaan stated that the committee shouldered the responsibility of reforming judicial system. She declared that she did not intend to step away from that responsibility.

The Judiciary Committee, which was newly formed in the recently elected 19th parliament, is tasked with holding JSC, Attorney General (AG), Prosecutor General (PG), Department of Judicial Administration (DJA), Labour Tribunal and Maldives Arbitration Centre accountable.

Additionally, some members also believe there is a conflict of interest as Hisaan formerly operated a law firm with the current AG Ibrahim Riffath.

Hisaan's name was nominated for the Judiciary Committee by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). The committee consists of eight MDP members along with Jumhooree Party (JP)'s Kendhoo MP Ali Hussain, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)'s Ibrahim Riza and independent Villingili MP Saud Hussain.

When MDP members raised concerns against Faresmaathodaa MP Hussain Mohamed sitting in the Human Rights Committee, his name was reportedly withdrawn and he was assigned to another committee.

MP's said it was a conflict of interest for him to sit on the Human Rights Committee while his wife is a member of Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM).
