Saudi Arabia on Monday handed over its donation of 50 tonnes of dates to the Maldives.
The ceremony was held at the Embassy of Saudi Arabia in capital Male, where Minster of Islamic Affairs Dr. Ahmed Ziyad Baqir accepted the gift on behalf of the Maldivian government.
The dates are an annual gift by the Arab kingdom to the archipelago for every Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting, which are then distributed by the government amongst the public.
However Maldives did not receive the donation in time for this year's Ramadan, which had sparked surprise and curiosity. At the time, the Islamic ministry had only stated that the government did not receive the donation without clarifying the reason for the delay.
