The government has decided on Sunday to reintroduce helicopter services, especially to be used in search and rescue operations or instances where medical evacuations are required.

The decision specified that twin-engine helicopters will be sought to commence these services. Public Policy Secretary Abdulla Nazim revelaed that six points were in consideration when reaching this decision, including opening a strict bidding process under which a service provider would be appointed.

The selected service provider will be instructed to prioritize medevacs and search and rescue operations.

If helicopter services are to be used for public transport, instead of emergency services, that would be allowed under special permits from the government.

As per Nazim, the cabinet also conferred on increasing the Civil Aviation budget, as well as ensuring to appoint an experienced helicopter pilot. The cabinet also decided that the selected service provider would be granted exclusivity for a period of 6 to 7 years.

The services will also be of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) approved standards.

The President came to this decision based on a paper submitted to yesterday's cabinet meeting by the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation.

A heliport is also planned to be built at Velana International Airport, as well as another location if so required.
