The Sri Lankan government has appointed Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed to seek foreign aid assistance for crisis-stricken Sri Lanka to improve its economic situation.

On Thursday, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe made the decision after discussions with Nasheed who offered to seek foreign aid for the country.

According to Sri Lankan media, the Prime Minister had accepted Nasheed's proposal, and thanked him for his gracious offer.

Nasheed has visited Sri Lanka a lot since his self exile in the UK. During former President Abdulla Yameen's administration, several senior opposition figures were also active in Sri Lanka. Maldives Democratic Part's (MDP) official activities were also carried out in Sri Lanka during former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's administration.

Sri Lanka's economic situation has deteriorated severely and the country has run out of essential commodities, including petrol and oil. The government doesn't have any choice other than to print money in order to pay salaries to government employees.

Mahinda Rajapaksa has recently resigned from his post as Prime Minister after protests against the government turned violent. Ranil was reappointed as Prime Minister.

On his visit to Sri Lanka, Nasheed has met with Sri Lankan political leaders including former president Maithripala Sirisena, opposition leader Sajith Premadasa, MP Namal Rajapaksa and Muslim Congress Leader Rauf Hakeem to discuss the country's situation and plan the way forward.
