Judicial Service Commission (JSC) on Wednesday suspended Chief Justice Dr Ahmed Abdulla Didi and Supreme Court Judge Adam Mohamed and decided to put forward a motion at the Parliament for their dismissal.
The judicial watchdog is currently investigating two judges of Supreme Court in addition to Chief Justice Didi and and Judge Adam Mohamed.
The Chief Justice released a statement against the investigation launched into him but JSC initiated a separate probe into Didi over his expression of views.
A statement by the commission stated that JSC's investigative committee found proof of disciplinary issues in their probe into Didi and Adam Mohamed and therefore, the commission decided to put forward a motion at the Parliament for the dismissal of the two judges.
In addition, JSC's statement declared that both judges were suspended for 60 days as the commission believes they must be temporarily relieved of their duties due to the nature of the investigation.
As per the constitution, judges can only be dismissed from their positions over a request made by JSC through a Parliament vote.
In the midst of JSC's investigations, Chief Justice claimed that JSC was investigating matters related to him that did not fall under the commission's authority, adding that there was no reason for him to respond to the commission.
While JSC is seeking to dismiss Dr Ahmed Abdulla Didi, who was appointed as Chief Justice in 2018, and Judge Adam Mohamed, the parliament recently voted to sack Supreme Court Judge Abdulla Didi as well.
Noting that Judge Abdulla Aree and Abdul Ghani Mohamed's cases are currently under investigation, the judicial watchdog revealed they were both now given the chance to respond to their investigative reports.
Adam Mohamed and Didi refused to present their response statements at JSC, claiming that there was no basis to counter the commission's allegations.
