A group of Maldivians were reportedly left stranded in Malaysia as a result of an erroneous announcement from Maldivian authorities.

According to local media outlet Mihaaru, two or three families that went to the airport to depart from Malaysia were prevented from leaving as they did not possess a 'special pass'.

After the Malaysian government nullified the movement control order (MCO) issued to curb the spread of COVID-19 on December 31, it was stipulated that individuals must acquire a special pass to depart from Malaysia.

However, it was reported that the Maldivian High Commission in Malaysia issued a notice on January 1, stating that individuals who had overstayed after entering Malaysia as tourists under a social visa or social visit pass would be permitted to depart without the special pass until January 14.

While several of the Maldivians stranded in Malaysia reported that they went to the airport without securing the document due to the announcement, the Maldivian High Commission has yet to make any official statements regarding the discrepancy.

As per the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Maldivian High Commission in Malaysia issued the announcement based on the information provided by Malaysian authorities.

The ministry assured that the High Commission would extend assistance to any Maldivians facing difficulties due to the aforementioned issue.
