STELCO Managing Director Hussain Fahmy has stated that the company is aiming to issue bills on the same day that electricity meter readings are taken.

In a press conference held yesterday, Fahmy said that there is a difference of approximately 25 to 30 days between the day readings are taken and when bills are generated.

"We are considering billing in real-time. This means, issuing the bill immediately on the day that readings are taken. We will do this through discussions with the public," Fahmy said.

Fahmy said that the issue of being unable to immediately issue bills has existed for about 15 years. He said that efforts are made to deliver bills to customers immediately, and that customers will be given the opportunity to apply for this.

Fahmy noted that there are many complaints about the delays in delivering bills.

STELCO provides electricity services to 70,000 households in the Male' region.

Fahmy said that the only route to decreasing electricity charges is by adopting renewable energy. It is a pledge of this government to generate 30 percent of the required electricity through renewable energy set ups.
