The Ambassador-Designate of European Union (EU) Denis Chaibi, Ambassador-Designate of Greece Dionyssios Kyvetos and Ambassador-Designate of Norway Trine Joranli Eskedal presented their letters of credence to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Sunday morning.
During separate ceremonies held at the President's Office, the President congratulated the designates and expressed hope that the bilateral relations between Maldives and EU, as well as Greece and Norway, will continue to prosper.
The ambassador-designate of EU also discussed with the President the need for further cooperation in areas of mutual concern, including climate change and counter-terrorism, and highlighted the EU’s three priority areas—environment and climate change, migration and digitalisation.
President Solih congratulated and commended the EU Council's decision to go carbon neutral by 2050. He also addressed the issue of tariffs imposed on Maldivian fish products by the EU and conveyed his hope for a positive way forward in this matter.
The Ambassador-Designate of Greece spoke to the President about common areas of concern such as climate change and its impact on the preservation of cultural and natural heritage.
Further discussions regarding the tourism sector mainly centered around exploring opportunities to increase tourist arrivals from Greece. President Solih also requested Greek government's support in reducing tariffs levied on Maldivian fish exports by EU nations.
The Norwegian Ambassador expressed her gratitude to the President for the warm welcome and highlighted the collaboration between the two countries in multiple areas including economic development, sustainable oceans and the renewable energy sector.
