Football Association of Maldives (FAM) reportedly owes MVR 6.5 million to State Electric Company (STELCO) in electricity bills.

STELCO has since cut power to FAM's building.

Earlier, the utility provider tweeted claiming that FAM had failed to settle the outstanding bills despite multiple notices. STELCO further warned that it will continue cutting power from the remaining establishments under FAM, should it fail to settle dues.

An official speaking from STELCO clarifies the association has failed to settle utility bills since September 2019 until September 2022. The owed MVR6.5 million to STELCO is inclusive of fine, said the official.

Due to the rundown condition of the original FAM House, its work and operations were transferred to a new establishment situated in Chaandhanee Magu earlier. The previous plot was vacated to construct a 20 story building, which has not commenced till now.

However, some of FAM's operations were retransferred back to the FAM House after this, while the establishment was used as a Covid facility amid the pandemic outbreak.

Meanwhile, some of FAM's operations are carried at Galolhu Football Stadium's administrative block.

This is the latest in a string of unsettled utility bills by some of the state-owned enterprises (SOEs). STELCO previously claimed Public Service Media (PSM) owed MVR 80 million to the utility provider in electricity bills, which the broadcaster failed to settle despite multiple notices.
