Seven clubs boycott Mihaaru News for criticising football

Seven out of eight clubs in the first division have boycotted Thursday's press conference, claiming that Mihaaru News coverage on local football is damaging to them.

Only Ismail Mahfooz (Inma), coach of Super United Sports (SUS), was present at the pre-match press conference of the President's Cup’s matches scheduled for Friday and Sunday.

As press starts, a media official from Maziya S&RC said that the club's management has decided not to represent in any press conference which includes journalists from Mihaaru News, the leading news paper of the country. The official accused Mihaaru of being personal and dissemination false news which is damaging to football.

Officials from Mihaaru has denied the allegation and said they have not received any complaint in this regard.

After Maziya’s statement another six clubs followed suit giving the same reason. They are, TC Sports Club, Club Valencia, Club Eagles, The Grande Sports Club, Club Green Street and United Victory.

According to Mihaaru, the clubs are not satisfied with the op-eds of Hamid Abdul Ghafoor, an expert of local sports and a former executive of Sports Ministry. The weekly op-eds, which was started publishing recently, are on issues related to local football and Football Association of Maldives (FAM).

Hamid has previously served as the Sports Director at the Ministry of Sports and as the Secretary General of FAM.

According to the regulations of the tournament, clubs must attend pre-match and post-match press conferences and speak to the media.

General Secretary of FAM Hussain Jawaz told Mihaaru that they will look into the matter.
