Former President Mohamed Nasheed slammed President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s government, claiming that the latter’s failed economic policy has caused food prices to rise in time for the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
In a tweet late Saturday, the former president noted that the prices of several products had significantly increased this Ramadan. Criticising the current administration for failing in its economic policies, he declared that the people should be provided their right.
Notable increases in prices include watermelon which is one of the products highest in demand during Ramadan, coconuts and lemons. The greatest spike in price is in chillies and peppers, which current range from MVR 200 to MVR 700 for a kilogram.
Traders and travellers state that the prices are expected to increase should the current bad weather across the archipelago persist.
Meanwhile, the government has publicly opened agricultural islands, which are registered under the Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture, to bring produce such as coconuts out into the market in Ramadan. However, the government has imposed a strict condition that such produce must be sold at economical rates.
