Four islands have reported flooding due to heavy rainfall to National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

NDMA in a statement said that Shaviyani atoll Goidhoo, Lhaviyani atoll Naifaru, Alifu Alifu atoll Feridhoo, and Baa atoll Maalhos reported severe flooding in the islands.

Though two residences from Feridhoo reported massive property damage, NDMA reported there were no severe cases that required relocation.

The authority further said the relevant island councils were working with Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) to drain the flooding. MNDF had already provided 1,000 sand bags to barricade residences from additional flood damage.

Additionally, NDMA has already provided water-drainage pumps to five islands that face regular flooding.

The authority said it will be sending pumps to 13 additional islands next week.

MNDF has been monitoring the islands on a 24-hour basis for which Maldives Meteorological Center has issued alerts.

Authorities have already cautioned central and southern atolls after the weather forecast authority warned of stormy weather, strong winds and rough seas in the next two days.

Local authorities have also recommended precautionary measures in sea transportation. MNDF further requested local islands that face floods the most to place sandbags in their residences.

While four islands have reported flooding, four islands reported similar incidents in the previous month as well which amounted to MVR 1.4 million in property damage.
