Minister Shahid sends condolences over Afghan floods

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid, on Saturday, sent a message of condolence to the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan Mohammad Haneef Atmar, following the devastating floods in Afghanistan's Parwan Province.

"It is with great sadness and sorrow that I received the news of the loss of lives and livelihoods, and destruction of homes caused by torrential rains and flash floods in the Parwan Province of Afghanistan", his message read.

Acknowledging the tragedy, which he said would be undoubtedly "compounded" by the challenges of the ongoing pandemic, Shahid extended condolences and sympathies on behalf of the government and the people of Maldives.

"Please also convey our deepest condolences to the members of the bereaved families".

The foreign minister ended the message, expressing hope that the efforts of the response teams continue swiftly and successfully, and praising the "perseverance of the brotherly people of Afghanistan during this crisis".

The series of floods, caused by torrential rain in Parwan Province killed at least 160 people and injured 250 others, in addition to destroying hundreds of homes, according to media reports.
