President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has declared that he will work to improve celebrations for Islamic holy occasions such as Eid with each year that he holds office.

Speaking at a ceremony held on Monday night to re-open the water fountain at Republic Square and commemorate the lighting of Eid decorations in major cities and islands around Maldives, President Dr Muizzu stated that holy celebration of Eid was a great blessing for the people in Islam, noting that it should be felt as so by everyone, especially children and youth.

"We are a 100 percent Muslim country," said the President. "As such, we should wait for Eid knowing it is coming, we should prepare for it from the beginning and participate in the celebration of Eid's joys fully in accordance with religious norms."

President Dr Muizzu stated that this was why he had intended to decorate the entire country for Eid celebrations. With the festival slated to begin on Wednesday, the government has installed lights and decorations in some islands, Malé and other cities of Maldives.

"We hope to light up even more islands next year," said the President.

He added that the government had been receiving requests from many islands to provide lights and decorations, and expressed hopes that Eid would be a colorful celebration this year.

"We are Maldivians, proud Maldivians. As Maldivians, we are one people. We belong to the same race, speak the same language, follow the same religion. We are one people. We are a collective, united people. This close companionship we hold for each other should not disappear from among us," said the President.

In his speech, the President implored for the people to not forget that we are one people despite differences of opinions and what might happen next. He said that the parents of today should teach their children to revive this spirit of unity in the community.

"At the end of the day, we are one people," said the President. "Strengthen your resolve to unite today."

"We want to bring happiness to every child. We want to fulfil their hopes and bring joy to their families. So, if we move forward with these goals together, our expectations will be achieved."

The President invited everyone in Malé to go outside with their families to participate in Eid festivities and conduct activities and events on the streets under the rules and opportunities afforded to them. The President also asked people living in islands to make the occasion an Eid where many people come out and celebrate with pride as Muslims.
