A court case related to the cancellation of a fishing race in Laamu Fonadhoo has been unsuccessful, as the court ruled against awarding compensation for the event's cancellation.

The Women's Development Committee in Fonadhoo had organized a fishing race scheduled for Independence Day last year. However, the race was canceled after participants had already set out, leading to a case being submitted against the committee.

The complainant argued that he had incurred expenses amounting to MVR 3,200 on boat rental, fuel, and other equipment. In response, the women's committee cited bad weather as the reason for canceling the fishing race.

The Fonadhoo court, in its ruling on Monday, highlighted that the rules governing fishing races did not provide guidelines for addressing cancellations due to adverse weather conditions. The judgment emphasized the globally recognized principle that entities are not held accountable for damages resulting from uncontrollable natural phenomena.

The court concluded that the Women's Development Committee had not acted illegally or irresponsibly in canceling the fishing race, and as a result, compensation could not be recovered in the present case.
