Addu City Mayor Ali Nizar has stated that the expansion of Addu Equatorial Hospital will cost MVR 100 million.

Speaking to Mihaaru News last week, Nizar said that it was a great loss to the people of Addu City that the Equatorial Convention Centre, built during former President Mohamed Nasheed's administration to hold the SAARC Summit, was converted into a hospital.

The convention centre, which was built to hold official functions, was converted into a hospital during former President Abdulla Yameen's administration.

The Addu City Council maintained that the hospital should be built on the land allotted for that purpose during Nasheed's administration. The council had even cleared the grounds for construction. The issue led to a major clash between Yameen's administration and the Addu City Council at the time.

"Now the government has to construct a brand new building because the [Yameen's] administration decided to convert the convention centre into a hospital, when a separate budget and land were already allocated for this purpose. From what I have been told, the hospital's new extension building would cost MVR 100 million," Nizar said.

The Mayor noted that there were no private rooms in the Addu Equatorial Hospital, which cost MVR 171 million to develop with funds attained by the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) and the OPEC Fund for International Development. Many services that should be available at a tertiary-level hospital are still not available at this hospital, he said.

He went on the say that there was no meaningful progress made in the city's economy or infrastructure during Yameen's administration.

Addu City Mayor also highlighted numerous developmental work carried out on the island during President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration.
