The magistrate court of Innamaadhoo, Raa Atoll, reviewed its previous decision to free two local men arrested over assaulting a foreign national, and ordered their re-arrest.

Police disclosed on Thursday that following the court's revision of their previous decision, seven days have been added to the suspects' remands.

The two Maldivians aged 48 and 38 were initially arrested on April 4, after they assaulted a 28-year-old Bangladeshi in Innamaadhoo.

According to the police, the victim was one of the labourers employed to work on the island's sewage system. The 48-year-old man was watering plants outside his residence and attacked the victim when the latter pointed out that he was spraying water on one of the machines being used by the labourers.

The police disclosed that the victim suffered facial wounds including a broken nose.

The island magistrate court ordered the suspects' release the next day during the remand hearing. Police noted that the court made the decision after receiving photographs of the victim's injuries, report, medical documents and witness statements.
