Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of the Maldives has begun investigating multiple cases of dead fish in large numbers washing up to the shores of northern atolls.
The majority of the dead fish that washed ashore include triggerfish and other fish from the same family.
EPA Director General Ibrahim Naeem spoke with Mihaaru News confirming that similar cases were reported to the Ministry of Environment from Noonu, Raa, Baa, and Lhaviyani atolls.
The agency has been unable to identify the cause of death for the fish.
Naeem however, said that fish generally died in large volume due to temperature rise or an epidemic related to the fish.
Besides trigger fish and other fish of the family, different types of reef fish have washed ashore as well.

A similar case of dead fish washing up to multiple shores was reported in 2007 as well, with majority of the cases reported from Meemu and Dhaalu atolls.
Naeem added the 2007 case was related to an algae-based disease to the fish.
