On this year's Fishermen's Day, Big Fish Maldives received a national award for exporting the largest volume of yellowfin tuna in 2021.

The private company was also recognised for being the largest exporter and buyer of yellowfin tuna last year.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih presented the award at the official ceremony held to mark Fishermen’s Day in Gaafu Dhaalu atoll Faresmaathoda on Sunday. The CEO of Big Fish Maldives Shafin Ahmed attended the ceremony to receive the award.

Shafin attributed the victory to the contributions of the company's employees as well as the support of local fishers over the past five years.

"This award was the culmination of the hard work of our team at Big Fish and our primary partners, the local fishers. We are truly proud of this achievement," Shafin said.

Founded in 2017, Big Fish Maldives is a prominent tuna exporter from the Maldives. The company primarily exports sashimi-grade tuna to the United States, Asia and EU destinations. The company set an industry benchmark for its sustainability practices, food safety and compliance.

Big Fish Maldives' factory is located in Kaafu atoll Hinmafushi. It is currently working to increase its operational capacity by launching a USD 5 million project on the island to process tuna for export to retailers in Europe and the United States.

The company will be investing an additional USD 10 million to develop a factory in the southern Gaafu Dhaalu atoll Thinadhoo next year, to process skipjack tuna.
