The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has requested the Prosecutor General's Office to file charges against the former Managing Director of Maldive Gas, Abdulla Maumoon.

The ACC said that, during his tenure as MD of Maldive Gas Pvt Ltd, Maumoon allegedly received MVR 3,106,189.38 as a bribe in connection with the procurement of cooking gas (LPG) from a foreign company.

ACC is seeking seven charges against Maumoon in the case, which are;

1. Under the Prevention and Prohibition of Corruption Act, the offense of accepting bribes in connection with a government initiative.

2. Charge of attempting to commit a crime

3. Charges of intent to commit a crime

4. Charges of conspiring to commit a crime

5. Charges of accepting a bribe

6. Charges of taking undue advantage of a position of influence

7. Charges of leveraging an official capacity to gain and provide undue advantage

Maumoon shifted abroad in 2018 following the change of government of former President Abdullah Yameen. At the time of his departure, serious allegations had been filed against him with the ACC.

Maumoon, however, has denied the allegations.

The ACC stated that the case was investigated at the commission's own initiative. The investigation revealed that the alleged bribes were connected to Maumoon and deposited in several companies allegedly linked to some of his family members.
