India stated on Thursday that they are confident Maldives will respect the people's choice in the Presidential Election 2018.

India's External Affairs Ministry's spokesperson Raveesh Kumar made the statement in response to a question asked during a press conference held at the ministry.

Kumar noted that India had on previous occasions called on Maldives to abide by the people's decision and the rule of democracy. He added that the results of the election reflect how much the Maldivian people wanted to maintain a democratic and constitutional rule in Maldives.

Furthermore, Kumar stated that India is sure that things in Maldives will go according to how the people decided.

Noting that among all its neighbours, India is closest to Maldives, Kumar said that the Indian government wished to strengthen the relationship between both countries.

During the press conference, Kumar also congratulated the current administration of Maldives for openly accepting defeat in the election.

The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the first to congratulate President-Elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih upon winning the Presidential Election.
