Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) poses a significant eye health challenge for premature infants. This condition occurs when the baby's underdeveloped retina develops abnormally due to premature birth, particularly affecting babies born before 32 weeks of gestation or weighing less than 1,500 grams.
ROP can lead to severe vision impairment, even complete vision loss, if left untreated, as the retina may become detached irreversibly.
Recognizing the critical need for intervention, EyeCare Hospital recently introduced ROP laser treatment, marking a significant advancement in addressing this issue.
The first procedure took place on November 23, treating a baby boy born at 33 weeks with retinal nerve abnormalities. Following treatment, the infant's abnormal nerves substantially reduced.
Leading the treatment is Vitreo-Retinal Specialist and Surgeon Dr. Mohamed Azzam Ali, who emphasizes the importance of this service for the Maldives' healthcare sector.
"ROP is a critical condition requiring specific treatment. The introduction of this service signifies the best approach to prevent vision loss in premature infants," Dr. Azzam stated.
The ROP laser treatment targets abnormal blood vessels in the retina, preventing further complications through a minimally invasive procedure conducted under topical anesthesia, prioritizing the child's safety and comfort.
Since the introduction of ROP laser treatment at EyeCare Hospital, 14 infants have undergone eye testing, with 10 successful ROP laser procedures performed on infants aged one to two months.
