First Lady Fazna Ahmed initiated the National Elderly Action Plan 2019-2021 on Monday, at a special ceremony held at Hotel Jen.
Under the new action plan, the government will implement the National Policy on Older Persons based on four primary areas of action:
- Care and protection
- Independence and participation
- Health and wellbeing
- Preparation for old age'
The plan also outlines ways to recognise socio-economic challenges to the elderly, ways to improve their wellbeing and protection, and to encourage greater participation in the community.
Speaking at the inauguration, Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services Shidhatha Shareef further announced the decision to mark September 1 every year as 'National Grandparents Day', to honour grandparents and recognise their contributions to family and society.
