Addu City Mayor Ali Nizar stated that while past administrations have invested significantly in tourism development in Addu, the key now is active citizen engagement.
Speaking at the launch of Addu City's tourism brand, "Destination Addu - One Brand One Story," at Canareef Resort, Nizar underscored the importance of local involvement in promoting Addu as a global destination.
Nizar highlighted the progress achieved by other islands like Thoddoo, a leader in the guesthouse industry, which he credited to local efforts more than government initiatives.
“This is the result of dedicated individuals seeking foreign income for the industry,” he said, also speaking about Maafushi and Himmafushi as successful examples.
The event was attended by Thoddoo Council President Karam.
He said that tourism is also thriving in Fuvahmulah City, once seen as unviable by experts. Nizar attributed this growth to the ambition and investments of young entrepreneurs in the tourism sector.
“We have worked tirelessly, and future councils will continue this effort. However, we need greater engagement from Addu residents,” he said.
Mayor Nizar highlighted Addu’s unique attractions, which offer activities for tourists spanning weeks.
“There’s no reason to hesitate to invest here,” he said, noting the current tourism success in Canareef Resort with nearly 400 tourists and South Palm, which has over 60 percent occupancy, and the consistent operation and award-winning record of Equator Village, even during the pandemic.
He also emphasized on Addu’s distinct appeal, including its diverse marine life, with larger sharks, which add to its underwater beauty as a dive destination.
Nizar called for collective unity despite differences of opinion, recognizing that one of the main challenges for Addu’s tourism is high airline prices. The Mayor urged businesses to focus on overcoming such obstacles.
Nizar said that Addu City Council’s tourism expansion efforts are unmatched among local councils in Maldives.
The council has established tourism zones and secured MVR 30 million in landscaping as aid from the Indian government.
“We are offering land at USD 1 per square meter per year for tourism activities, with opportunities for investors under our regulations,” Nizar said.
Mayor Nizar also said that land has been allocated for diving schools and water sports facilities, with 12 plots in Hithadhoo and plans for more in other neighborhoods.
