Orange Warning for torrential rain and possible flooding issued for northern Maldives

Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has issued an Orange Warning for the northernmost atolls of the Maldives from Haa Alifu to Shaviyani atolls.

The weather agency of the country, MET has forecasted torrential rain and thunderstorms, with a risk of flooding in the northern parts of the country.

The MET's alert system includes White Alert, Yellow Advisory, Orange Warning, and Red Warning. The Orange Warning, which is alert level 3, is issued following 90 mm of rainfall in one hour or 120 mm of rainfall in six hours accompanied by heavy rain and flooding hazards.

MET has forecasted particularly bad weather across the island nation this week.

The average monthly rainfall during the rainy monsoon is 100-200 mm.

National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), along with police and other relevant agencies, has advised people to take necessary precautions due to the severe weather conditions.
