Cigarette filters were thrown from a Hiyaa flat apartment into another apartment just moments after a fire broke out in the same social housing zone on Friday evening.

This incident is the latest in a series of fires across various Hiyaa Flat apartments, mainly caused by cigarette filters being thrown without being properly extinguished. This reckless habit on the part of smokers has put fear into other residents living in the heavily crowded housing towers.

The fire on Friday evening was reported around 8:30 p.m. from Hiyaa Flat tower H7. Reports also claim that the fire was caused by a cigarette filter that was not extinguished.

Moments after the incident, a resident of Hiyaa Flat shared a video clip on Facebook in which the user claimed that lit cigarette filters were thrown just a few minutes after Friday evening's fire at the H7 tower.

"Just a while back there was a fire in a neighboring flat… and yet, here are cigarette filters thrown from apartments above," the resident captioned their video. The filter landed close to a few garbage bags kept on the balcony.

"Will they learn only when someone loses their life?" the resident added.

The issue has become rather alarming, and Urbanco recently warned that any Hiyaa Flat resident found throwing lit cigarette filters will possibly be evicted from their apartments. The corporation further added that it will be working with Maldives Police Service to identify the individual who threw the filter in the Facebook video.
