PG Office, Police establish communications protocol for major crimes

The Prosecutor General's (PG) Office, on Thursday, announced the compilation of a communication protocol with Maldives Police Service over matters related to major crimes and issues impacting the order of society.

According to the institution,, the protocol came into effect on November 2, under a special recommendation by the Parliament Committee on National Security Services.

As part of the new guideline, PG Office has developed an online portal to share information in real-time between the two institutions, including when an arrest is made and details of the case.

Moreover, with the implementation of the protocols, the PG Office will assign a prosecutor or a team of prosecutors to each individual case lodged by Police within a 24-hour period.

In addition, a system will be created to record discussions and recommendations forwarded by the prosecution team in writing, including a procedure for communication between the two, further making the process more collaborative, efficient and decentralized.

The PG Office, as requested by the parliament committee, has also forwarded a specific protocol for investigations into major crimes for approval by the committee.
