Fiyoaree School in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll will operate in two sessions after a building in the school’s premises completely burned down in a fire.
On Sunday evening, the old building at the school caught fire. It was used for the school’s Special Education Needs (SEN) classes and three general classrooms. The school’s storeroom was housed in the building.
The school ran in a single session with its 165 students. However, following the fire, the school had to split the classroom sessions.
Since one of the school's buildings was rendered unusable, Mohamed Iqbal, the administrator, lamented the inconveniences.
“We have 43 students in a single classroom,” Iqbal said about the school’s current situation. “We now have to divide the classrooms into two sessions until we get a new building.”
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education said that it was assisting the school in maintaining uninterrupted teaching sessions.
The authorities were able to control the fire after it had fully destroyed the structure. Iqbal speculated that the fire originated due to an electrical shortage, though no official reason has been cited yet.
