Maldives Police Service on Monday launched a major investigation into the recent fire incidents in Malé and the atolls.

The Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed announced the decision on Twitter after a massive fire broke out in Malé Neelan Fihaara this morning; but he did not reveal further details. The smoke from the fire had completely engulfed the expatriate accommodation block situated next to the venue.

The police launched the investigation to rule out arson. While the authorities investigated all previous fire incidents, they did not claim foul play in any of them.

Malé Neelan Fihaara is a flea market in the capital city known for purchasing and selling secondhand or used goods.

Yesterday, there was a fire broke out in Gaafu Dhaalu atoll, Fiyoaree School; on Saturday, there was a massive fire in Raa atoll, Alifushi; on Friday there was a fire in Hulhumalé phase 2; and on the last day of December 2022, there was a fire in Hulhudhoo, Addu City.

At the end of December last year, an accommodation block owned by Afcons Infrastructure, the contractor for the Thilamale Bridge, on the man-made island of Gulhifalhu, burned down.

Malé City saw its deadliest fire in November 2022 when an expatriate housing complex burned down after a fire started in the structure's garage. Ten people were killed in the incident, including migrant workers from Bangladesh and India.
