Afocns Infrastructure has provided temporary housing for the victims of last night’s fire.

At around 12:30 A.M. on Friday night, a fire broke out in the accommodation blocks where the company’s employees stay on the man-made island of Gulhifalhu. The accommodation blocks house 465 people.

Afcons said that the company has other accommodation units in Hulhumalé, as well as in Gulhifalhu, and that the employees were being transferred to these places. The Hulhumalé Development Corporation (HDC) also assisted in finding accommodation for the victims of the fire, the company said.

Over 70 people were injured in the fire. While 13 individuals are being treated at the state-run Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), the remaining 60 individuals are being treated at the Tree Top Hospital in Hulhumalé.

Injuries included broken limbs, other serious wounds, and various degrees of burns sustained as victims jumped out of the buildings to escape the fire. Some were also treated for smoke inhalation.

The Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) had put out the fire within an hour; the accommodation block was completely burned and unusable, they said.

Afcons Infrastructure is the Indian company developing the bridge that connects the capital city of Malé to Thilafushi and Gulhifalhu.
