World Bank to extend MVR154 mil to Maldives

World Bank has reported on extending a grant worth USD10 million (MVR154 million) to increase the competition and enhance the services in the broadband internet market in the island nation.

The grant will also be focused on improving the security and safety features of broadband services, increase digital technology infrastructure as well as strengthen the data analytics culture.

The bank in a statement said that it was helping the Maldives to increase its competitiveness in the broadband internet market, overcome climate change challenges and use of digital IDs in accessing online services.

Moreover, the statement of World Bank further noted that while internet services are available throughout the Maldives, the field faces hurdles in terms of service access in various atolls.

Furthermore, the bank's assistance will expand broadband internet services in the country while enhancing the legal and administrative frameworks required to develop a digital economy.

The nationwide project is carried as "Digital Maldives for Adaptation, Decentralization and Diversification" under which the digital infrastructure will be improved throughout the country.
