The ice plants operated by Fenaka Corporation across the atolls have been handed over to MIFCO yesterday.
MIFCO said that this included 14 ice plants in various islands: HA. Ihavandhoo, N. Lhohi, R. Alifushi, B. Thulhadhoo, F. Nilandhoo, Th. Hirilandhoo, GA. Dhaandhoo, GA. Dhevvadhoo, GA. Gemanafushi, GA. Kolamaafushi, GDh. Faresmaathodaa, GDh. Fiyoari and S. Hithadhoo.
The two companies signed the handover agreement yesterday.
MIFCO said that teams of engineers and technical staff have now commenced repairs and alterations to the plants so as to operate them at full capacity.
They said that this move would contribute towards further advancing the services provided by the company, expressing hope of receiving full cooperation from fishermen.
Difficulties in seeking service from Fenaka operated ice plants has been a long standing complaint from fishermen and those operating fishing vessels. They raised concerns of lack of supply and frequent technical issues at these ice plants.
Fenaka previously said that these issues had been rising due to the company not having the necessary technical skills to repair the ice plants. It was due to this that through collaboration with the Fisheries Ministry, these ice plants have now been transferred under MIFCO.
