The government has facilitated procedures for crossmatch sample extractions necessary for bone marrow in the Maldives. A team from India is scheduled to visit the country to conduct the extractions, which will then be tested upon their return to India.
Procedures for extracting samples required for crossmatch tests done prior to bone marrow transplants has now been arranged in Maldives.
Associate Specialist in Pediatrics at Maldivian Blood Services, Dr Ahmed Umar stated that previously, families had to travel to India in order to do these crossmatch tests which incurs significant costs.
Therefore, he asserted that many benefits have been brought through this newly implemented change.
The government has presently arranged a team from the Bangalore Hospital in India to arrive in Maldives for extraction of crossmatch samples, who will then return following sample collection.
Recently, a round of samples have been collected using this procedure.
"This procedure has been made permanent. From now on, a team of Indian doctors will come to the Maldives, collect the samples, and conduct the tests in India. All expenses for this trip will be covered by the Indian hospital," said Dr. Umar.
Nearly 650 Thalassemia patients are currently receiving treatment in various regions of the Maldives. Additionally, the government has decided to build a hospital focused on the treatment of this blood disorder.
