President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that Islam and Dhivehi subjects will begin being taught in additional countries accommodating Maldivian students this year.
Presently, the two subjects are being taught in Sri Lanka, India and Malaysia.
Revealing this during President Dr. Muizzu’s first Presidential Address at the Parliament today, he additionally declared his intent to bring about significant positive changes to the educational field during his tenure.
Under this, one development the president highlighted was the broadening of Dhivehi and Islamic education to additional countries. “God willing, we will expand the education of the Dhivehi language and Islamic studies to students residing in foreign countries this year," the President said.
He said that this program will nurture well-mannered and disciplined generations with a love for their nationality.
He had also announced the decision to establish a national library in each island in the country to encourage a love for books and reading.
In addition to the state’s resolve to further expand the education of Dhivehi language and Islamic studied to more countries, they had also announced that Nationalism will begin being taught at schools as a separate subject in the upcoming new academic year.
As such, 11 schools have already begun teaching the subject to fourth grade students.
Teaching Islam, Dhivehi and Quran in addition to the study of Maldivian customs and traditions to Maldivians living abroad was begun during former President Abdulla Yameen’s government in the year 2014.
Since then, the students of the Maldivian Educational and Cultural Center (MECC) in Sosan Villa, Colombo, Sri Lanka has been taking Ordinary Level examinations in these subjects.
While Maldivian students in India are being taught Islam and Dhivehi as well, Malaysia implemented this practice during the preceding government under former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s tenure.
