The main hub of the Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) has been leased to another party following the expiration of the notice to vacate the premises.

The hub, located near Artificial Beach in Malé, served as a strategic location for the Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) to organize political events and gather large crowds. It was established during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen, when MDP played a prominent role as the opposition.

The party's hub was established on a property owned by Shafiyaa Zubair. According to lawyer Hamza Haleel, who represents Shafiyaa, the notice given to MDP to vacate the premises expired last week. He said that there had been no indication from the party about extending the rental agreement, as the contract was coming to an end.

Hamza further said that initially the first notice was was verbally communicated to MDP considering the upcoming election and their lack of an alternative property to operate the hub. However, no further discussions took place regarding the matter. As the landlord expressed the intention to reclaim the property, they have now assumed control after formally notifying MDP through a notice.

"The landlord has now leased the property to another party," Hamza said.

Initially, Shafiyaa had intended to reclaim the land to develop the property.

Shafiyaa is an active member of former President Mohamed Nasheed's faction "Fikurrege Dhirun," meaning "Reviving an Ideology".

According to the party, despite the expiration of the agreement to run the party hub on the premise, the owner initially allowed them to stay until the end of this year's presidential election scheduled for September 9. However, the owner had later asked them to vacate the premises.
