The Hanimaadhoo Airport is being constructed with funding from a concessional Line of Credit (LoC) of USD 800 million extended by the Indian Government.
Minister of Construction and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib, Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen, and High Commissioner of India to Maldives Munu Mahawar visited Hanimaadhoo today on a site visit to observe the progress of the work at the airport.
The Ministry said that, to date, 67.5 percent of the project has been completed. The work is being conducted by Indian contractor, Kalpataru Projects.
Under the new airport project, a 2.7 kilometer runway, a terminal with the capacity to cater to 1.3 million passengers, and a jet fuel storage will be established.
The ministry said that 97 percent of the 2400 meter runway and apron has been completed as of now, with it reaching completion by November. The completed section of the runway is currently in use.
While 75 percent of the air traffic control tower has been completed, 51.4 percent of work on the passenger terminal is also done, the ministry said.
Of the fuel farm and fuel jetty, 44.5 percent has reached completion, with assembling of the tankers now in progress.
50 percent of the airport roads and 55 percent of the MNDF centre has been completed as well, according to the ministry.
The airport is built to allow for landing of A320 and Boeing 737 flights.
Exim Bank of India will spend USD 136 million on the project.
