The Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) between India and Maldives for the establishment of ferry and cargo services by sea which was signed on June 8, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Maldives, has been approved.
In the statement, Indian Press Inform Bureau (PiB) stated that the agreement signed by President Ibrahim Solih and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which would link Kochi with capital Male' and Kulhudhuffushi, Haa Dhaalu Atoll, was approved by the Indian cabinet.
The MoU was signed “with a view to harness the potential opportunity that lies in passenger and cargo transportation by sea between the two countries”.
Male' and Kulhudhuffushi are situated approximately 708 km and 509 km away from Kochi respectively. Kulhudhuffushi and the northern Haa Dhaalu Atoll are considered untapped tourist destinations.
The current means of travel between Maldives and India are flights which are an expensive option. This ferry service would also enable Maldivians cheaper access to the country.
