The government has awarded Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) the MVR 105 million project for land reclamation and revetment installation in the waste management island of Thilafushi.

At a ceremony held at the environment ministry, the agreement was signed on behalf of the government by the minister, Ibrahim Thorig, while the deputy managing director of MTCC, Krik Riza signed on behalf of the company.

The project funded under the Public Sector Investment Program (PSIP) budget is to be completed in 240 days with 15 hectares of land reclaimed.

Speaking at the ceremony, Thoriq stated that the government was aiming to cease the burning of waste materials in Thilafushi by the end of this year. He added that efforts are underway to procure some necessary equipment required for waste management with the aid of the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Reclamation of land in Thilafushi is a phase of the ongoing efforts to cease the burning of waste in Thilafushi. When all the phases of the project are complete, it would have the capacity to incinerate 500 tonnes of waste daily.

According to the environment ministry, a system that generates eight megawatts of electricity, from the heat produced from the incinerator, would be established and connected to the capital Male’. A USD 126 million project with funds from the state and ADB are underway to solve the problems in waste disposal at Thilafushi.
