Police on Tuesday arrested a local man in Kaafu atoll Himmafushi island in connection to the death of an expatriate, who was employed at the island’s water plant.

Maldives Police Service confirmed that a Bangladeshi national, 38, employed at the Life water plant in Himmafushi died last Saturday.

Mihaaru understands that the deceased’s body was first taken to Himmafushi’s health centre and has since been transferred to the Galolhu Mortuary in capital Male.

Police stated that the investigation into his death is underway and refused to disclose further details.

According to sources, the local man arrested in connection to the death is a former policeman who has close relations with the manager of the water plant.

A resident of Himmafushi also told Mihaaru that the water plant’s manager has been suspended in the wake of the expat’s death. However, the claim has not been confirmed yet.

“We don’t know yet whether the Bangladeshi died of violence. Police are looking into it,” said the Himmafushi resident.
