North-Galolhu MP and Parliament Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla said the results at the recently held first round of presidential elections is proof that the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has been "divided".

Eva made the remarks while debating about forming standing committees during the parliament sitting on Tuesday, September 12.

At Tuesday's sitting Eva said that the objectives of The Democrats presidential candidate Ilyas Labeeb were achieved in the presidential race.

"Truth is that you [Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed] affirmed to split [MDP] during the formation of this party, and there is no doubt that it has been achieved," Eva highlighted Nasheed's statement of dividing the ruling party after his exit to form The Democrats.

Eva also said that they achieved their objectives despite the pressures, mockery and intimidation directed at her and the party as well as offers of bribery.

She also described her party's decision ahead of the runoff polls on September 30 is important in solidifying victory for the next government.

MDP candidate and incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih came in second at the first round of the election. He secured 86,161 votes (39.5 percent) while his main opposition in the presidential race, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu from the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People's National Congress (PNC) coalition, took the lead with 101,635 votes (46.6 percent).

Following the first round results, MDP extended invitations to other political parties to form alliances ahead of the second round election, and entered into discussions with The Democrats.

Recently, MDP parliamentary group rescinded the no-confidence motions submitted against both Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed and Deputy Speaker Eva earlier in June 2023.
