State Minister of Health Dr Shah Abdulla Mahir introduced cancer-treatment medication at the 'Onco-Spectra' symposium held on Sunday.

The specialised medication was introduced by collaboration of State Trading Organisation (STO), national health-care insurance scheme Aasandha, Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), Care Society and 'Dr Reddy's Laboratories' pharmaceutical company.

The medication is now readily available at STO pharmacy at IGMH and Hulhumale' Hospital. The drugs are covered by the Aasandha health-care plan.

The two-day symposium will conclude at Hulhule' Island Hotel on Monday. Approximately 120 doctors and nurses from IGMH, ADK, Hulhumale' Hospital and Treetop Hospital are partaking in the symposium.

Maldives' first Oncologist Dr Mohamed Shifan described the symposium underway is to provide training and disseminate information to doctors and nurses on different types of cancers. He further declared that veteran doctors from various countries worldwide would give presentations at the event.

"Experts in Oncology will provide information on the various types of cancers, latest research and new methods of treatment", said Dr Shifan.

Information to identify detrimental side effects of the drugs will be disseminated in the symposium. Further, nurses will be given instructions on regulations to administer the medication.
