President of the Elections Commission (EC) Ahmed Shareef has resigned on Tuesday.
In a letter addressed to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Shareef said he is resigning to give the opportunity for others to take the position. He believes he had done the duties of EC with integrity during his tenure, he said.
He said he was grateful for having the opportunity to lead the previous three elections in Maldives, in a tweet he made in Dhivehi. He said he will continue to serve Maldives in public offices.
Shareef was appointed as President of EC by former President Abdulla Yameen on on March 6, 2018. He was appointed as President after the former President of EC Ahmed Sulaiman resigned. When Yameen lost the Presidential Election of 2018, his supporters claimed that Shareef had committed election fraud and protested for his resignation as well.
